Brendan Rodgers may be using the Leicester job as a ‘stepping stone’ to eventually join Arsenal or Chelsea in the future, former Celtic star Kris Commons claims.

The Northern Irishman has been handed the King Power Stadium hot seat on a three year deal – with Neil Lennon replacing him as Hoops manager until the end of the season.

And Commons, who was frozen out of the line-up when Rodgers arrived in 2016, believes the reason his former boss has taken the role is to land a bigger job in the future.

As quoted by The Sun, Commons said: “It wasn’t that long ago that he was linked with the Arsenal job – that’s the sort of thing that Brendan wants.

“I think he wants to be winning titles, being part of cup-winning teams.

“Whether this is a stepping stone, whether or not this is going to be a couple of years job to look at possibly the likes of an Arsenal, maybe a Chelsea, I think that’s more in Brendan Rodgers’ mind right now.”

Although conceding it may be easier for Rodgers to land a job as a top six coach with Leicester, Commons was clear the Foxes post was not bigger than the job he had at Celtic Park.

When asked if that was the case, he said: “Absolutely not, no. I think the English Premier League has played a huge part in Brendan going down there.

“I think Leicester have got a top coach, a top manager, a proven manager.

“But I think, for me personally, Brendan’s better than Leicester. I think he’s proven that at Liverpool, he’s proven that at Celtic.
