PHOENIX, AZ — Two doctors who cared for the patient who was sexually assaulted and later gave birth at a long-term nursing facility in Phoenix are no longer working at the facility, according to a company statement.

In the statement, Hacienda HealthCare said the two doctors are no longer providing medical services to its patients. The statement said that one of the doctors has resigned and a second doctor has been suspended.

“Once again, we offer an apology and send our deepest sympathy to the client and her family,” the statement said. “Hacienda intends to do everything possible to restore its credibility in the eyes of our patients, families, the community and our agency partners at every level.”

Phoenix police responded to the facility on Dec.29 for the report of an infant in distress. According to police, an incapacitated woman in her 20s had given birth and both the mother and baby were taken to the hospital. Police described the woman as being unable to move and unable to communicate.

Police began a sexual assault investigation on the same day. Hacienda has hired former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley to conduct an internal review of the case. The company’s CEO, Bill Timmons, resigned shortly after the case became public.

According to The Arizona Republic, an attorney for the woman’s family said the woman can respond to her family, but in a limited way. The attorney said the woman’s condition is the result of seizures in early childhood, the paper reported.

“The important thing here is that contrary to what’s been reported, she is a person, albeit with significant intellectual disabilities,” the attorney, John Micheaels, told The Arizona Republic.
