Manchester United host Liverpool on Sunday knowing it will be their biggest domestic test under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in the Premier League since the Norwegian took temporary control after the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

So far, he’s overseen eight wins and one draw in the league, including an impressive 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but facing Jurgen Klopp’s men will be another huge match, which could help decide whether he gets the job permanently or not.

Solskjaer is no stranger to the rivalry either having featured against the Reds on 11 occasions during his time at Old Trafford as player.

Meanwhile, he’s also managed against them once and versus their Under-23 side twice.

But how do his records stack up ahead of the massive clash, which you can hear live on talkSPORT? Find out below.

Solskjaer vs Liverpool as a player

Overall, the Norwegian’s record isn’t the worst having played 11 games and won five of them.

He also netted three times against the Reds, while assisting another, which given his goal scoring exploits may well disappoint him.

In his first season he only played against them once, in a 1-0 victory, and didn’t face them at all in his second one.

But his most vital contribution, unsurprisingly, came in the 1998/99 season on the way to their famous treble as he netted a last minute winner against the Reds in the FA Cup fourth round.

A late Dwight Yorke goal cancelled out Michael Owen’s opener and looked to have sent the tie to a replay but Solskjaer, on as a substitute for Denis Irwin as Sir Alex Ferguson threw caution to the wind, was having none of it and nicked the ball of Paul Scholes in the penalty area before driving it home beyond David James.

He also ran off celebrating while hold the Manchester United badge which sent supporters wild.

Meanwhile another 90th minute goal, in a 4-0 win at Old Trafford in 2003, will no doubt also bring back fond memories.

Solskjaer vs Liverpool as a manager

The Norwegian has only been in charge of one match against the Reds during his coaching career – and what a game it was, too.

He led his Cardiff City side, battling against relegation, in a nine-goal thriller but eventually saw his men fall to a 6-3 defeat.

The Bluebirds had led twice, thanks to goals from Jordon Mutch and Frazier Campbell but a Luis Suarez hat-trick and a Martin Skrtel double ended their hopes of victory, even if Mutch did get another late on.

Solskjaer will be hoping for a better outcome when United host Liverpool – live on talkSPORT – this Sunday.
