The European Commission confirmed on Friday that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will meet Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels on Thursday — at the same time as diplomats from the U.K. and EU will be holding Brexit talks.

“The president [Juncker] is in contact with  … his peers from the previous times, after [all] he was prime minister for 20 years, and Tony Blair is one of these peers,” Commission spokesman Alexander Winterstein said. “They are good friends, they’ve known each other for a very long time.”

“This is nothing out of the extraordinary,” Winterstein added.

Winterstein said that Blair and Juncker will discuss the Middle East, Libya, Blair’s faith foundation, and “current issues of European economics and politics,” without saying if that would include Brexit.

Asked about the timing of the meeting — U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis and the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier are expected to be in the Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters that day — Winterstein responded: “There is no conspiracy theory there.”

Blair is a vocal opponent of Brexit, and has mentioned the possibility of returning to politics.
