Chelsea have targeted Steve Holland as interim manager should they decide to sack Maurizio Sarri next week, according to reports.

Sarri is on the verge of being dismissed at Stamford Bridge – with his side having lost three of their last five league games and crashing out of the FA Cup at home to Manchester United on Monday.

Numerous reports are stating a loss to Manchester City in the EFL Cup will seal the Italian’s managerial fate.

In the most recent development, The Telegraph are reporting Blues chiefs will turn to their former coach Steve Holland as interim boss should they decide to dismiss Sarri next week.

Holland worked with Chelsea for eight years before becoming Gareth Southgate’s no.2 at England two years ago – and he will reportedly be asked to double up on his duties to accept this role to return to west London.

The 48-year-old is a familiar face to many of the current Blues squad and was a popular member of staff among the Stamford Bridge dressing room in his time at the club.

He has also been in attendance of many club fixtures in recent days – including the defeat to Manchester United on Monday and Thursday night’s victory over Malmo.

This has seen rumours of a potential return for Holland hot-up – and although Chelsea have insisted they have not held talks with any potential replacements for Sarri, he is said to be interested in the role.

England only have two matches remaining before the end of the season – European qualifying matches against Czech Republic and Montenegro next month – and the Blues could expect the FA to return the favour they paid to them by requesting Holland’s services in a bid to turn their season around.

Meanwhile, another rumoured suitor for the role is Gianfranco Zola – who has been bed-ridden in hospital following complications from gallstone surgery.

The Chelsea legend and current assistant to Sarri has managerial experience but there are reservations from the club about his suitability for the role.
