Ospreys have been handed a boost after Wales international fly-half Owen Williams pledged his future to the region by signing a contract extension.

Williams originally arrived at the club as injury cover after being released by Worcester Warriors, but he has firmly cemented his position in the squad.

The pivot’s renewal will not only bring further stability to the team, but also galvanize the side in their pursuit of future success, as Williams confirmed.

“It’s great to be signing a new deal with the Ospreys. I’ve really enjoyed the time that I’ve spent here so far and I’m excited to see what we can achieve together in the future,” he said.

“The Ospreys are a club that truly believes in its culture and values, and I am fully committed to upholding those standards both on and off the field wherever I can.

“This is my home region, I can’t wait to get back to work and push ourselves to be the best team that we can be.”

Williams’ form saw him recalled to the Wales squad and he started their win over Italy, with Ospreys head coach Toby Booth thrilled to keep hold of him.

“I’m delighted that Owen has decided to re-sign with us. He’s an incredibly talented player who brings invaluable experience to our squad,” he explained.

“Owen has been a key part of our team this season, and I’m looking forward to seeing him continue to develop and thrive with us moving forward.

“He’s a consummate professional both on and off the pitch, and he sets a great example for the younger players in our squad. His ability to manage games and dictate the pace of play has been instrumental for the team this year.”

Edinburgh re-sign scrum-half Charlie Shiel

Elsewhere in the United Rugby Championship (URC), Edinburgh scrum-half Charlie Shiel has inked a one-year extension with his boyhood club.

The 25-year-old made his 50th appearance in this season’s 1872 Cup clash at BT Murrayfield, and is a third generation Edinburgh player, following in the footsteps of father Graham Shiel, and grandfather Dougie Morgan.

Shiel has featured 14 times this season, playing a key role in away wins at Zebre Parma and Cardiff Rugby in the URC, as well as Castres in the Champions Cup.

On penning a new deal, Shiel said: “I’m really thrilled to be staying at my boyhood club. We have a special group of players and are a tight knit squad. It’s always an honour to pull on the Edinburgh jersey and represent this city and our supporters.

“We’ve got a great nines group at the club who all push each other on. Working with guys like Ben [Vellacott], and then next season Scott [Steele] only improves your game. I relish the competition and will be pushing to start for the club once again next year.

“Running out at home in front of the Edinburgh fans is always an amazing experience. There is a real connection to our fan base and I already can’t wait to kick on next season.”
