The Wallabies’ coaching staff ahead of the upcoming Rugby World Cup is falling into place after Rugby Australia announced the appointments of Neal Hatley and David Rath as the latest additions to Eddie Jones’ backroom team.
Hatley has been appointed as the team’s scrum coach and is set to join the Wallabies set-up from Premiership outfit Bath in May.
The 53-year-old is a former prop who represented Bedford and London Irish and started his coaching career at the Exiles.
Hatley was part of Jones‘ coaching staffs with England during the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and is looking forward to his new challenge.
“I’m honoured to join Eddie and the Wallabies in what’s a massive year with the World Cup just over five months away,” he said in a statement.
“While my focus is here with Bath at the moment, I know there’s plenty of potential within the playing group in Australia and I’m looking forward to maximising that when I begin the role.”
Code switch for Rath
Meanwhile, Jones has appointed Rath as a ‘learning coordinator’. Rath comes over from the AFL where he worked as head of football at St Kilda. Prior to that, he won four AFL Premierships with Hawthorn.
Jones, who also appointed Brett Hodgson as his defensive coach last month, is delighted that Hatley and Rath is joining the Wallabies‘ ranks.
“It’s great to have Neal and David on board with the Wallabies,” Jones said.
“Neal’s a coach with a tremendous amount of experience and knows what’s required to be successful at international level.
“David has worked with the best coaches in the AFL and will bring a skill set that will help aid our learning environment.”
