Eddie Jones believes he still has a “bit in the tank”, suggesting he may try to push for another Rugby World Cup after his contract with England runs out in 2023.
The 62-year-old has long been fascinated with the World Cup since his Australian side lost to England in 2003.
Jones would then go on to play a key role as a technical advisor in the Springboks’ triumph in 2007.
The Australian-born coach would almost achieve his goal of winning the Webb Ellis Cup as a head coach with England in 2019 but fell short in the final for the second time in his career.
“There’s still a bit to do”
Despite previous suggestions from Jones that he would retire after his England tenure, the tactician admits that may not be the plan anymore.
“No. Definitely not. It won’t be. I can’t guarantee you that, but I don’t think it will be,” said Jones.
“I reckon there’s still a bit to do. There’s still a bit in the tank. I rang up the boss of the Barbados IPL and he’s not interested…”
Jones is targeting continuous growth in the build-up to next year’s showpiece and will be looking to use every Test before then to build consistency before heading to France.
“The one thing you want to be doing from here to the World Cup – and every coach will say the same – is improving,” he said.
Developing at every opportunity
“You don’t want to be static and you don’t want to show everything. If you show everything then teams come up with plans to stop you doing that.
“We want to win every Test in November but we don’t want to be showing any tactical developments that maybe we’ll want to use in the World Cup.
“You don’t want to show it in the warm-up games. You want to be able to do it on the training paddock consistently then be able to do it bang at the World Cup.”
England kick off their Autumn Nations Series against Argentina on November 6 before facing Japan on November 12.
The final two Tests are intriguing prospects as the Red Rose face New Zealand and South Africa on November 19 and November 26 respectively in what will serve as a good measuring stick for Jones heading into 2023.
