The new Marseille manager has spoken. Igor Tudor was presented this afternoon during his first press conference at the club where he signed a 2-year deal yesterday. The Croatian considers managing Olympique de Marseille as equally challenging as it is an opportunity to thrive – and spoke to former Marseille player and 1992/93 champions league winner Alen Bokšić in preparation for his new job:
“I want to thank the president for his nice words. It is an opportunity as well as a challenge. The owner, Frank McCourt, gave me a good impression of the club. I want to do well here and we have already established the approach for next season. Everyone knows the huge size of the club – I spoke with Alen Bokšić, who talked to me about the history, and I’ve also studied last season’s matches.”
The Croatian replaces Jorge Sampaoli after the Argentine’s shock exit on Friday. The former Juventus assistant, who was managing fellow Serie A club Hellas Verona this past season before leaving the club in May, has signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1’s second-place finishers. He has been praised for his ambitious, pressing-oriented style of play.
Sampaoli’s exit was quickly negotiated at the end of last week, with the former Argentina and Chile manager reportedly resigning over what he saw a lack of ambition in the transfer window ahead of next year’s Champions League campaign.
