Former WWE and WCW star Dean Malenko will appear at Starrcast II the weekend of May 23-26. The announcement was made on April 26, less than 24 hours after Malenko reportedly quit WWE.
“The Man of 1000 Holds” walked away from WWE after an eight year run as a backstage agent. No details have been released as to why Malenko wanted out, but the timing of his Starrcast announcement is indeed interesting.
Malenko’s apparent departure is just one of the creative exits that have happened over the past several weeks. Fellow Four Horseman Arn Anderson was fired in February after a 17-year run as a road agent. Creative writer Robert Evans quit WWE after he was supposedly reprimanded for inserting Vince McMahon’s name in Bret Hart’s Hall of Fame speech on April 6.
Brian “Road Dogg” James resigned from his position as SmackDown head writer, even though he’s evidently still with the company. Now Malenko is out of the picture, leading many fans to wonder who could leave next.
Is it possible that these creative changes are unrelated? Or is all of this a symptom of something bigger happening behind the scenes? It could be that the creative exodus from WWE may not be over.
Starrcast II continues to make the news, as WWE recently pulled both The Undertaker and Kurt Angle from the event. With the addition of Malenko, it’s obvious that Conrad Thompson’s extravaganza is continuing to grow despite WWE’s apparent efforts to slow it down.
