This past weekend Impact Wrestling held their annual Bound for Glory pay-per-view at the Melrose Ballroom in New York. The show featured an open challenge from former world champion Eli Drake, which was of course answered by James Ellsworth.
Because the two parties have been teasing working together quite a bit lately, it got into some people’s heads that Chris Jericho would make an appearance at the show, which resulted in the entire live crowd being extremely disappointed when Ellsworth was revealed as the mystery opponent – in particular because he’s not even from New York, which was the only stipulation of the open challenge.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan to answer Eli Drake’s open challenge was actually popular indie star Joey Janella, who has been gaining a ton of momentum over the last few years and really took off with his match against Hangman Page at ALL IN.
Unfortunately, Janella recently suffered a nasty injury that left him with a myriad of issues, requiring fairly extensive surgery. He is expected to be out of action for quite awhile. Apparently there Bound for Glory appearance was just the first step in a larger plan, as there were reportedly talks of using the “Bad Boy” in a full program with Drake going forward.
