MCC Region I Hall of Fame to induct seven on March 4th

The Mayo Civic Center Region I Wrestling Hall of Fame will honor seven new members at The SEMWREC Wrestling Recognition Banquet on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the downtown Marriot in Rochester, MN.

Social Hour will begin at 5.30 PM, Dinner will be at 6.00 PM, to be followed by an Awards Banquet for High School Seniors, Teams and Coaches, and the Hall of Fame program. Zach Sanders, four-time All-American for The Gophers, and five-time state champion for Wabasha-Kellogg High School, will be the guest speaker.

Inductees

Athletes:

Rick Clark was the one-class 119-pound state champ for Dover-Eyota in 1972. Rick wrestled for Rochester Community College and was a two-time NCAA II runner-up for St. Cloud State.

The late Bob Henry was a two-time state individual champ (one-class system) for Owatonna High School in 1961 and 1962. Bob also was the captain of the 1962 state high school team champions. He had a 75-4 high school record. Henry was a two-time Big 10 Champion for the Minnesota Gophers.

Steve Rice was a 1966 one-class state high school champion as a sophomore for LeRoy-Ostrander High School. Steve was a three-time state placewinner and finished with a 120-14 mark with 90 pins. He was also All-State second team in football.

Coach:

Frank Murphy had a great 19-year run at Lewiston-Altura High School as the head wrestling coach. Frank’s teams compiled a 160-63 record. He coached a pair of state individual champions, numerous placewinners, and his team earned a District 3 title, along with conference championships. Frank retired in 1990 from Coaching. He was a small college All-American at South Dakota State.

Contributors:

Gary Heydt has officiated for 26 years, including at 16 MSHSL State Tournaments during that time. The Hayfield native was third at state for the Vikings earning over 100 career wins. Heydt is a member of the Hayfield Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Chuck Siefert has served as a contributor for over 35 years to the sport of wrestling. Chuck is a member of the SEMWREC Board of Directors and has served as a tournament director for well over 100 events hosted by the Rochester Regional Sports Center, including The NJCAA Tournament, when he was selected as their Wrestling Man of The Year. The former long-time Rochester Community College coach and Byron High School coach was an NCAA II All-American at St. Cloud State.

Reggie Sikkink of Lake City has served the sport of wrestling for over 30 years. Known as “The Voice” of the Section I Wrestling Team and Individual Tournaments, Reggie has also served as a MSHSL announcer. He has served on the State Weigh-In Committee and done tournament table help as well. The Harmony native wrestled under hall of famer Jon Rhodes and served for a number of years as a freestyle and youth coach for Lake City’s program.

Interesting Trivia: Rick Clark, Chuck Siefert, and Reggie Sikkink were on the same team at Rochester Community College.
