One of the most unexpected stories of this year has been the rise of Jinder Mahal in WWE. Within the span of a few weeks, Jinder went from being nothing more than a minor player in the company to a pay-per-view headliner. it all started when he suddenly won the right to face Randy Orton for the WWE Championship at Backlash. Fans were shocked to see “The Maharaja” win the title for the first time ever in his match against Orton. Since then, Jinder Mahal has managed to hold onto the title for much longer than most fans likely expected that he would, and he has even surpassed the 100 day mark as WWE Champion as well.
It still came as a shock to some fans when Jinder Mahal defeated Shinsuke Nakamura at last night’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view to retain the WWE Championship. This has convinced some fans that Jinder will likely continue to hold the championship until sometime next year. It was noted by Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer that WWE does still have a tour in India coming up, but an advertisement for one of the shows listed Mahal as a “two time WWE Champion.” This would indicate that Mahal likely would have lost the title last night (or at some point soon) before regaining it before WWE’s tour in India begins later this year in December.
However, the advertisement has since been changed to “current WWE Champion.” Furthermore, Jinder Mahal also debuted brand new side plates at Hell in a Cell, which WWE likely would not have paid for if they planned on having Jinder drop the title soon. It now seems safe to say that Jinder Mahal will remain WWE Champion at least until the upcoming tour in India has concluded. Don’t expect anyone to take the title from Mahal anytime before that. The unexpected title holder is the 50th man to win the prestigious championship, and at this rate, he could be holding the title until the Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, and maybe even longer than that.
