Hungary’s Fidesz faces calls for inquiry into alleged election irregularities

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party was facing calls for an inquiry into alleged electoral irregularities after the Telegraph revealed how the country’s diplomatic corps was being pressed into finding negative immigration stories to boost Viktor Orban’s re-election campaign.

Sweden’s Ambassador to Hungary and senior opposition politicians on the Left and Right led calls for an investigation into the alleged misuse of state power as Hungarians went to the polls on Sunday morning in parliamentary elections.

Eve-of-vote polls suggest that Mr Orban is on track to win a third consecutive four-year term in office following a bitter campaign in which he demonised Middle Eastern migrants as “Muslim invaders”…
