Augustana opens NSIC season at Northern State, followed by Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wis.

Augustana (7-4) returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 14 traveling to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on the Wolves of Northern State University (0-2) to open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual season.

The Vikings will then embark on one of their toughest weekends of the season, traveling to Kenosha, Wis. for the Ranger Duals on Saturday, Jan. 17 hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Augustana will open the Wisconsin-Parkside-hosted tournament wrestling against Findlay in the first round with a start time of 9 a.m.

Then following Findlay, the Vikings will square-off with Indianapolis at 10:30 a.m.

Augustana will matchup with Tiffin, ranked 18th in NCAA Division II at 12 p.m.

Closing out the day, the Vikings competition remains stiff as they face Mckendree, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II.

Augustana will continue NSIC competition hosting MSU-Moorhead on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in the Elmen Center with a start time of 7 p.m.

The Vikings will then head to Marshall, Minn. on Saturday, Jan. 24 to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State starting at 7 p.m.

Scouting the competition – Ranger Duals
– Findlay –
• Findlay enters the 2014 Ranger Duals with a 1-0 record.
• The Oilers opened the season ranked No. 5 in the preseason national poll, but dropped out recently.
• Findlay is led by one of the top 149-pound wrestlers, Nic Goebel.
• Ranked fourth in his weight class, Goebel is 9-3 this season with a 6-1 record against Division II opponents.
Series: Augustana is 5-0 all-time against the Oilers, most recently defeating Findlay 34-9 on Jan. 18, 2014.
• All four duals have been neutral meetings with the Vikings winning each handily.
• The Vikings first defeated Findlay on Jan. 20, 2002 before defeating the Oilers in consecutive years in 2006 and 2007.

– Indianapolis –
• The Greyhounds are 0-5, most recently going 0-2 against Findlay and Tiffin on Jan. 10.
• Leading UIndy are two wrestlers ranked in the top-eight of their respective weight classes.
• Josh Kieffer (125 pounds) checks in at the No. 8 spot, and owns a 2-1 record against Division II opponents.
• Collin Crume owns the No. 8 ranking at 133 pounds.
• Last season the Vikings won 38-9 at the Ranger duals on Jan. 18, 2014

– #18 Tiffin –
• The Dragons are 2-1 on the season, with the latest victory over Indianapolis on Jan. 10 with a 31-12 victory.
• Leading the Tiffins are three wrestlers in their respective weight classes. No. 7 Mike Screptock (141 pounds), No. 8 Jake Cramer (197 pounds) and No. 2 Garrett Gray (285 pounds).
• This will be the first time meeting between the two programs.

– #6 McKendree –
• The Bearcats will be the highest-ranked opponent of the season thus far that the Vikings have faced.
• McKendree enters this weekend with a 7-2 record and finished sixth at the NWCA national duals.
• Three McKendree wrestlers are nationally ranked in their weight classes.
• Julian Smith is No. 3 at 197 pounds and owns an 18-4 record this year.
• At 165 pounds, Nick Haferkamp is ranked No. 2 for the Bearcats with a 26-8 record.
• Debuting in the national rankings for the Bearcats is 184-pounder Jon Vogt, checking in at eighth.
• Last year, the Vikings matched up with McKendree at the Ranger duals, losing 28-8.
