INDIANAPOLIS – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team competed at the first day of the Midwest Classic on Saturday, with junior Tommy Walton being the lone Dragon to advance to the second day. Walton won three out of his four matches on the day at 141, including a fall over Central Missouri’s Carson Meek. Three other Dragons – Zach Scott, Preston Lehmann, and Jordan Magnuson – won two matches on the day.
Walton, the lone senior on the Dragon roster, started his day with a tech fall win over Noah Kile of Coker College before dropping a 9-8 decision to Danny Swan of Lindenwood. After his win over Meek, he defeated Wheeling Jesuit’s Tyler Alberts by a 7-0 decision to advance to the second day.
Sophomore Zach Scott picked up two wins on the day at 149, starting with a 6-0 win over Dawson Sickmeier of Lindenwood to start the day. After losing a major decision to Isaiah Kemper of Mckendree University, he defeated Alex Rhine of Bellarmine University by a 12-7 decision. His day came to an end with a loss to Emmanuel’s Jay Sheppard.
At 197, sophomore Preston Lehmann picked up a fall over Dominique Hampton of Central Missouri before losing to conference opponent Nick Baymler of Upper Iowa to end his tournament.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Magnuson nearly advanced to the second day after picking up two wins at 285, but was eliminated by McKendree University’s Christian Boyles.
Redshirt freshman Mitchell Kotschevar also picked up a win at 184, a 5-3 decision over Ci’Vaughn Green of Bellarmine University before being eliminated by Bailey Kelly of Maryville University. Freshman Cole Jones and junior Weston Dobler also went 1-2.
The second day of the tournament will begin on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT.
