F4W NEWSLETTER: Recapping WWE Extreme Rules

Joseph Currier recaps Extreme Rules, which saw Brock Lesnar cash in to again become Universal Champion.

Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view ended with Lesnar cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Seth Rollins to win the Universal title. After Rollins & Becky Lynch defeated Baron Corbin & Lacey Evans in the main event, Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out with the briefcase. Rollins charged at Lesnar, but Lesnar gave him two German suplexes. The bell rang to start the match — and Lesnar hit an F5 to again become Universal Champion.

Rollins will get his rematch for the Universal title at SummerSlam next month. He won a number one contender’s battle royal on the post-Extreme Rules edition of Raw, defeating Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Corbin, Rey Mysterio, Sami Zayn, Big E, Bobby Lashley, and Cesaro.

Rollins’ three-month reign as Universal Champion ended up being pretty lackluster. It started strong with a great defense against AJ Styles, but Rollins’ matches were only as good as his opponents allowed them to be. It’s difficult to succeed when the majority of your PPV title defenses are against Corbin.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

We have two weekend shows up, a show with Garrett Gonzalez going in-depth on the ROH/AEW television situation, as well as on the first two nights of G-1 at Korakuen Hall, and last night’s show with Bryan Alvarez talking G-1, WWE this week and UFC.

Aleksei Oleinik suffered a fractured right leg last night according to Ariel Helwani in his 12 second loss to Walt Harris.

For weekend Google trends, the Manny Pacquiao win over Keith Thurman had more than 2 million searches making it the biggest thing of the weekend along with Mahershala Ali.  For yesterday, Greg Hardy was the ninth most searched for term with 100,000, which even when the novelty of his fighting should wear off, tells you why they continue to book him in high profile situations even when it brings the company heavy criticism.

Scheduled for Smackdown on Tuesday is Shane McMahon addressing Kevin Owens, Kofi Kingston announcing his SummerSlam opponent (presumably Randy Orton) and Charlotte Flair vs. Ember Moon. So there is no Daniel Bryan announcement being promoted.

The New York Times has a story on Cassandro including the trailer for the documentary on his life.

WWE
Mick Foley, who is among the cast of characters on Raw tomorrow night, appeared last night on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” show.
Scott Hall, who is also on Raw tomorrow night, was at the NXT show in Lakeland coaching the talent, particularly the debuting Jordan Omogbehin.
John Cena is currently working on the movie “Suicide Squad 2” which is why he’s not scheduled for Raw.
The stipulation where if Baron Corbin & Lacey Evans lost last Sunday to Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch where they could never get a title shot lasted five days, with Lynch defending against Evans the last two nights.
Add Maryse to the list of those scheduled for Raw tomorrow.
