House arrests and pigeon bans: China ups repression of dissidents ahead of 70th anniversary of Communist rule

Wei Xiaobing, 42, was detained for two weeks, then harassed daily by police at work, and is now corralled with guards watching his every move – all because he shared some links online in support of the pro-democracy protests that have gripped Hong Kong for months. 

“At the moment, I’m not allowed to go outside,” he secretly messaged the Telegraph while under house arrest and living in a hotel as a police officer sat across the room from him.
