MINNEAPOLIS — Augsburg University wrestling Head Coach Jim Moulsoff was named the 2019 d3wrestle.com Coach of the Year, after leading his Auggies to their 13th NCAA Division III national title, it was announced on Tuesday.
It is the first time Moulsoff has earned the honor from d3wrestle.com, a website that covers NCAA Division III wrestling. It’s Moulsoff’s third national coaching award in his five years as head coach; he earned NCAA National Tournament Coach of the Year honors in both 2015 and 2019 from the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He’s also earned Region Coach of the Year honors four times in his five Auggie head coaching seasons.
This season, Moulsoff led the Auggies to one of their most dominant performances in program history, claiming their 13th Division III national title since 1991, and first since Moulsoff’s first season as head coach in 2015. The Auggies dominated throughout the national competition in Roanoke, Va., winning with 130.0 points, a 64-point margin of victory over second-place Loras (Iowa), which had 64.0 points. The Auggies qualified nine wrestlers to national competition and had seven All-Americans and four individual national champions — tying a Division III championships record set three times earlier by Augsburg (2000, 2004 and 2005) and four times by other schools. Augsburg’s four national finalists were its most in a single tournament since 2011, and its seven All-Americans were its most since 2015.
Augsburg finished 11-1 in dual meets this season, including winning the NWCA Division III National Duals championship for the second straight year. Augsburg also claimed the title at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional, claiming an NCAA regional title for the 17th straight season.
Moulsoff is in his 12th season on the Augsburg wrestling coaching staff, having served as an assistant coach for seven seasons before being named the 10th head coach in the history of the program in 2014. In his five seasons as head coach, Augsburg has a 59-13 dual-meet record, and he has coached 27 Auggies to All-American honors, along with eight individual national champions. Since he joined the coaching staff in the 2007-2008 season, Augsburg has a 124-36-1 dual-meet record, 62 All-Americans and 14 individual national champions.
Augsburg has also excelled academically under Moulsoff’s leadership. During the last five seasons, Augsburg has finished among the top 20 schools nationally in the NWCA’s Scholar All-America Team standings each year, including a second-place finish in 2017 and a fourth-place finish in 2018. This year’s Auggies finished 18th with a 3.537 team grade-point average. Augsburg had six individual NWCA Scholar-All-Americans, bringing its total to 33 since 2015. and 159 in the history of the program.
