Baltic appointments

New jobs for Latvian and Lithuanian.

At the last meeting before Christmas, the European Commission managed to reach its target of making sure there was a director-general or deputy director-general by the end of the year.

Rytis Martikonis, who until recently was Lithuanian’s permanent representative to the EU, was appointed deputy director-general in the Commission’s internal market department. Normunds Popens, currently Latvia’s permanent representative to the EU, was appointed deputy-director general in the  regional policy department.

But before Martikonis could take up his post, which was supposed to happen on 1 April, it was decided that he will instead be deputy director-general in the translation department. The post of deputy director-general at the internal market department will now be advertised.
