Slight fall in unemployment rate
Marginal change in unemployment figures, but more than 25 million EU citizens are out of work.
Unemployment has fallen marginally year-on-year in the eurozone and in the entire European Union, according to figures released today by Eurostat.
Almost 25.5 million EU citizens were unemployed in April, which is 10.4% of the economically active population. Unemployment in the eurozone in April was 11.7%, compared with 12% in April 2013.
Unemployment in April compared with March was stable at 10.4% in France, fell marginally in Italy to 12.6%, and in Spain was 25.1%. In Greece, unemployment fell by 10 basis points month-on-month to 26.5% in February, the latest figures available for the country. Austria and Germany had the lowest levels of unemployment, at 4.9% and 5.2% of the economically active population.
Non-eurozone countries had lower unemployment rates, with 10.4% of EU citizens out of work, down from 10.9% in April 2013.
Unemployment in the UK fell by 1.2% year-on-year to 6.6% in February. It fell by 0.4% in Denmark to 6.5% in April. Croatia continues to suffer from extremely high levels of unemployment, at 16.8%.
László Andor, the European commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion, said: “Unemployment continues to decline in the EU’s 28 member states as a whole as well as in the euro area, which is encouraging. However, many new jobs are precarious, and we are far from ensuring that every person has a real opportunity in the labour market. That’s why we need to continue determined support for a job-rich recovery, through greater efforts at EU level and within the member states. Conditions for investment need to improve further, with a strong focus on investment in human capital.”
