Cate Blanchett Decided to Re-Wear Her 2014 Golden Globes Gown to Cannes for an Important Reason

It’s not often that you see celebrities repeat outfits on the red carpet. Most stars are lent their dresses and return the fabulous looks once the event is over, but for the lucky few that get to keep their couture it makes sense that the dress should be worn again.

Cate Blanchett decided to do just that when she walked the red carpet to celebrate the opening of the 71st edition of the Cannes International Film Festival in France. The actress, who is the head of this year’s jury panel, chose to wear the same black lace crinoline Giorgio Armani Privé gown she wore when she won a Golden Globe for her performance in Blue Jasmine in 2014.

She styled the dress similarly on both occasions, accessorizing the floor-length dress with statement diamond earrings. The major mixup was in how she styled her hair. For the Golden Globes, she opted for a faux bun and berry lipstick, and for Cannes she went for a low updo and a light pink lip.

Blanchett’s decision to re-wear the gorgeous couture gown was deliberate. “From couture to t-shirts, landfill is full of garments that have been unnecessarily discarded. Particularly in today’s climate, it seems willful and ridiculous that such garments are not cherished and re-worn for a lifetime,” she told InStyle

The actress’s stylist Elizabeth Stewart echoed her sentiment. “I think the stigma around re-wearing a dress is arbitrary and makes no sense,” she told Eco-Age.

As for the dress itself, Stewart told InStyle, “This was one of our favorite and most cherished dresses from Armani. It is incredibly special and took hundreds of hours to make.” She adds, however, that “it’s not only beautiful artisanal dresses that should be cherished and re-worn, but tee shirts and jeans as well. Beautiful clothes should last a lifetime.”

They couldn’t be more right. A black great black dress never goes out of style, and Blanchett definitely proved that tonight.
