Manchester United are suffering a severe injury crisis with little option but to bring youth players into the squad.
Luckily for the Red Devils, they have a raft of extremely talented youngsters waiting in the wings hoping to make the most of their opportunity.
Nine players missed their trip to Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Anthony Martial, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones missed Sunday’s goalless draw with Liverpool, when Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard were forced off during an extraordinary first half.
All six will be missing at Palace, as will long-term absentees Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian along with highly-rated 17-year-old Mason Greenwood.
Marcus Rashford also has an ankle injury and is a doubt for the match.
Whoever does get there chance they will be hoping to take their chances in the first team just as Rashford did three years ago.
He was called into the team after Martial suffered an injury in the warm up against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and went on to score twice.
Interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that some of their youngsters will be brought into the first team to cope with the crisis.
He confirmed that James Garner, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes are all travelling to Selhurst Park.
Here is more on those three who could profit from United’s injury woes.
James Garner
The 17-year-old defensive midfielder signed his first professional contract in May and has been named on the bench in the FA Cup and Champions League matches.
He is clearly highly thought of at United and has been compared to a club legend by interim boss Solskjaer.
“Jimmy Garner is a Michael Carrick but 20 years younger, so I’m sure he’ll do well,” he said.
Tahith Chong
The 19-year-old forward joined United from Feyenoord in the summer of 2016. He has impressed for the under-23s this season and was selected to go on the club’s pre-season tour of the US.
He earned his first senior call up when he was named on the bench against Juventus in October and was given his debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the FA Cup win over Reading.
The left-footed wide player loves to show off his pace and trickery and has the ability to both create and score goals.
Solskjaer said about Chong: “And Chongy, he’ll definitely be taking people on if he comes on. But they’re ready, they’re kids.
“It’s hard when you’re a defender coming on if you’re 16, 17, but as an attacker you just go out there and express yourself. There’s your chance. They can win you the game, they don’t lose it for you.”
Angel Gomes
Gomes was part of the England under-17s team who won the World Cup in 2017.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has the ability to provide a spark in the midfield to create chances.
He was set for a loan move to allow him more first team football but the move was blocked by Solskjaer.
“They’ve been part of our training for a long time now,” Solskjaer said. “I’m sure Angel, he’s been successful with England Under-17s, there with (Jadon) Sancho, (Callum) Hudson-Odoi and (Phil) Foden.
“So, he has been a big part of that and, Angel, I am definitely sure that if he gets the chance, he’ll do well.
