Inter Milan are set to lower Mauro Icardi’s release clause in a new contract offer to the 26-year-old.
The striker, who lost the Inter captaincy to long-serving goalkeeper Samir Handanovic earlier this month, has been linked with big money moves to Manchester United and Chelsea.
Icardi has a €110million release clause in his current deal, which runs until 2021, but Italian outlet La Repubblica claim clubs will need to spend €80million to activate a new buy-out clause if he signs fresh terms at the San Siro.
Icardi’s last Inter appearance came in a 1-0 win over Parma on February 9. He was not included in the squad for the club’s Europa League last-32 victory against Rapid Vienna and has missed two Serie A games.
Corriere dello Sport say the Argentina international could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
However, there have been reports of a falling out between Icardi and manager Luciano Spalletti, who wants his star man’s future resolved soon.
He said: “Mauro is evidently seeing his performance affected by some situations that have been going on recently.
“He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him.
“The directors agreed to start talking about the contract, so now they need to go there and conclude it.”
Before his last appearance, Icardi had scored nine league goals in 20 games, plus four in six Champions League appearances.
