The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is arguably the fiercest in English football and their clash on Sunday is live on talkSPORT.

The two sides from the north-west are the most decorated clubs in the country – and this has inevitably seen the rivalry intensify over the years.

Key personnel from both parties have added fuel to the fire with quotes from their experience of the derby.

talkSPORT.com has explored the best quotes from past players and managers of each club.

Steven Gerrard

“A mate owned a Bryan Robson top. We were kicking about, and I asked if I could be Robbo for a while.

“My dad looked out and went ballistic. He wasn’t having his kid dragging the Gerrard name through the gutter. I thought we’d have to move!”

In another quote about the rivalry, Gerrard also said: “You’ve got the two most successful clubs in the country and the rivalry is huge because of how close the clubs are and all the battles we’ve had over the years.

“If you ask any fan or player to pick a game they’d like to win, you look for United.”

Ryan Giggs

“I think I’ve always shown the right respect to Liverpool and the history they have and great team they are.

“But I also know that it’s the team I get the most pleasure out of beating.”

Wayne Rooney

“I grew up an Everton fan, my whole family are Everton fans and I grew up hating Liverpool.

“And that hasn’t changed.”

Sir Alex Ferguson

“My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their f*****g perch. And you can print that”

Speaking about the rivalry at another point, Sir Alex also said: “Clubs come away from Anfield choking on their own vomit and biting their own tongues knowing they have been done by the referee.”

Rio Ferdinand

After scoring an injury time winner in 2006, Ferdinand said: “Manchester United and Liverpool is a huge rivalry.

“It’s our biggest rivalry, in terms of the success they had in the 80s and then United became successful, so the rivalry is huge.

“So to score a winner like that, last minute in the Stretford End, you explode. If you could bottle that emotion, you’d be a very rich man.”

Phil Chisnall

The forward signed for Liverpool directly from Manchester United in 1964 and remains the last player to move between the clubs.

On arrival he said: “Manchester and Liverpool are two great cities less than one hour apart.

“The fans are from working-class backgrounds and they are proud of their own team which is why the rivalry exists.

Manchester United v Liverpool is live on talkSPORT at 14:05 on Sunday, February 24.

“And in recent times it has become even more intense with United equalling and latterly overtaking Liverpool’s record of eighteen league titles while both battle for supremacy in the Champions League.”

Robbie Fowler

“You admire them for what they’ve achieved and respect them but, as Liverpool, we think we’re better.

“United probably do the same.”

Brendan Rodgers

“When you manage Liverpool you know the Manchester United job is gone.”

Jamie Carragher

“Let’s get this clear: I want United to lose every time they play. I’m pleased when they lose.

“I’m sure United fans feel exactly the same about Liverpool and I wouldn’t change that.”

Norman Whiteside

“I did exactly what the supporters dreamed themselves of doing in my position.

“I kicked lumps out of Liverpool. I became their representative on the pitch, and they’ve never forgotten it.”
