Luis Suarez: Barcelona need their Uruguayan striker to rediscover his goalscoring touch on the road or Champions League misery awaits

Luis Suarez is a world-class footballer, there is no doubting that.

However, even the man himself must be slightly concerned with his recent form – which has yielded just one goal in his last eight games in all competitions for Barcelona.

More amazingly though, the former Liverpool striker has gone exactly 25 hours and 11 minutes without finding the net or setting up a goal in the Champions League.

After failing to get on the scoresheet in the Catalan giants’ 0-0 draw in Lyon on Tuesday night, it means Suarez has now scored just once in his last 17 appearances in the competition.

Barcelona were incredibly wasteful in their last-16 first leg encounter against the Ligue 1 giants, failing to convert any of their 25 shots in France.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s game, Barca manager Ernesto Valverde issued a staunch defence of his under-fire striker.

He said: “It doesn’t worry me. It would worry me if he wasn’t getting chances, which is what you ask for from a centre-forward.

“Even if he doesn’t have chances, he creates them for his team-mates. Opponents are frightened of him.

“Football is like that and strikers will have these streaks. The important thing is to have chances.”

While Suarez hasn’t scored in any of his five games in Europe this season, it must be noted that his goal to game ratio in La Liga this campaign is far from below par.

The 32-year-old has notched 15 goals in 23 games in the league, contributing five assists along the way.

Suarez certainly showed no signs of lacking bite in Barcelona’s 5-1 thumping of their arch-rivals Real Madrid back in October.

Although it must be noted Suarez hasn’t produced another performance of that ilk in the four months since then.

It is not just Suarez who has struggled for goals though, with Valverde’s men only scoring twice in their last four matches.

They should get the job done on March 13 at the Camp Nou and seal a spot in the last eight.

Even if they do though that, if Barcelona are to advance beyond the quarter finals of Europe’s most elite competition for the first time in three years they will need Suarez to find his goalscoring boots again on the road.

If he doesn’t they can kiss goodbye to their hopes of claiming a first Champions League crown since 2015.
