Marcelo Bielsa says fans are the most important thing in football after Leeds supporters queued up to get a photo with the manager at an Under-23s game.
The eccentric Argentine has breathed new life into the historic club this season, giving them hope of a Premier League return after 15 years away from the English top flight.
And Bielsa, nicknamed ‘El Loco’ for his ‘crazy’ personality, has become something of a cult hero at Elland Road after just eight months in charge.
After he was spotted watching the club’s Under-23s earlier this week, fans flocked to get their picture with the boss, who patiently obliged.
“I do it because in football the most important element are the people who love the shirt, the club,” Bielsa said.
“They’re not asking for an autograph or photo of me. They’re asking for a picture with the head coach of Leeds.
“I understand the feeling that links the fans with the person who represents their club so I never say no to anyone who asks.
“The most significant thing in football is the love people have for their club and the identification of many around something which allows them to gather together and express themselves.
“We live in an individualist society but this is something which unites people.
“The chance to be part of it in a privileged position is something people desire, and it’s a privilege to be here.”
The Whites are currently third in the Championship, two points off Norwich and Sheffield United, however they have a game in hand on both promotion rivals.
Bolton travel to Elland Road on Saturday as Leeds return to action after an extended break.
