Brendan Rodgers would be making a ‘step up’ in his career by leaving Celtic to take over at Leicester City, talkSPORT have been told.

The Northern Irishman is a leading contender for the Foxes job after Claude Puel was sacked on Sunday.

The Frenchman was given the boot after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at home, bringing a close to his 16-month spell as boss.

He leaves the club 12th in the Premier League after a run of five defeats from their last six games.

Leicester are now on the hunt for their fourth permanent manager in 23 months, with Rodgers among the early frontrunners.

And Martin Lipton, chief sports writer for The Sun, believes returning to the Premier League would be the natural next step for the former Liverpool boss.

Speaking on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “What more can Brendan Rodgers do at Celtic?

“He’s won so many trophies and he’s had an unbeaten season, it can only go one way and that’s downhill.

“Celtic are a huge club, but they’re a big fish in a small pond.

“If you go to a Premier League club it’s a step up – they have bigger money and bigger players.”
