Joe Hart: Former England number one could join MLS after failing to displace Tom Heaton at Burnley

Joe Hart may quit the Premier League for Major League Soccer after struggling to regain his place in the Burnley side.

The 31-year-old made 19 league appearances at the beginning of the season with Tom Heaton and Nick Pope both out injured.

But the former England number one has not played since their 5-1 Boxing Day defeat to Everton after Heaton returned from injury.

Heaton’s recall has coincided with an upturn in Burnley’s form and they have gone from occupying the relegation places to 14th.

As a result, Hart’s name has reportedly been put to clubs in the American league, according to The Sun.

Columbus Crew need a goalkeeper because Manchester City are signing Zack Steffen in the summer.

There is no rush for them to sign a replacement, though, as the transfer window in MLS does not shut until May.

Burnley are likely to let him go if his wages are covered as they have Arsenal target Nick Pope to compete with Heaton for the rest of the year.

Manager Sean Dyche said at the time: “It was a tough one on Joe, but Tom is a great pro and his professionalism has paid him back.

“I must say, though, Joe was the first one jumping off the bench when he made that save at the end [against West Ham], which tells you a lot about the group.”
