talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has hit out at Celtic and their captain Scott Brown over his ’embarrassing’ celebration from Sunday’s late, late defeat of Kilmarnock.
Brown netted an injury time winner for the Hoops at Rugby Park to send Celtic eight points clear at the top of the Premiership table, before being sent off a minute later for going into the crowd to celebrate his strike.
This victory came just three days after Celtic were comprehensively beaten by Valencia in the Europa League, with the Spanish side rocking up at Celtic Park to claim a 2-0 win which puts them in a fantastic position to reach the round of 16.
The Hoops are all but out – barring a remarkable turnaround at the Mestalla – and Durham thinks the over celebration against Killie was ridiculous given how ’embarrassing’ it was for Celtic to lose at home to Valencia days earlier.
“Here’s what I’ve got to say about Scott Brown and that red card at the weekend,” Durham began on Monday’s Drivetime show.
“I am looking at somebody who is over-celebrating; I know it’s a late winner, but realistically we all thought Celtic were going to win the league.
“We all thought Celtic would finish way ahead of Kilmarnock – it’s not such a big deal that Celtic have beaten Kilmarnock.
“It’s a very fortunate, deflected winner. He hasn’t scored the goal of the season there Scott Brown.
“But as a leader, as somebody who sets the tone at that football club, somebody who is so well-respected at that football club, what Scott Brown should’ve done – instead of going marauding off, beating his chest and kissing the badge and telling the fans how brilliant he is – how about just stick your arms by your side, turn around walk back to the centre circle and crack on with the game.
“Because Thursday night was a huge embarrassment for Celtic football club – and he [Brown] was a part of that.
“So I think to over-celebrate a scrappy, deflected winner at Kilmarnock in such a fashion is embarrassing, just a few days after that performance against Valencia in Europe.
“It is Celtic all over, it is classic Celtic. What Scott Brown did, just, it smells of Celtic.”
Matt Holland, who was co-hosting the show with Durham, could not believe what he was hearing – but his arguments were shot down.
“React in the right way,” Durham continued. “Maybe one arm in the air… but to go charging into the fans like you’ve done something extra special, really?
“It’s just over-celebrating! And bearing in mind how terrible he and the rest of the team were on Thursday night, I just think the guy should show a bit more humility.”
