Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez struck from second half set-pieces to secure a 2-0 win for Atletico Madrid over Juventus.
The Serie A side were poor at the Wanda Metropolitano, lacking the cutting edge or guile to trouble Diego Simeone’s side.
Despite Alvaro Morata having a goal ruled out by VAR, the Spanish side proved to be too resilient for Juve’s star-studded attackers.
In truth, the physicality and precision with which Atletico operated seemed to stun the Italian champs, who looked devoid of any answers.
The set back of having a penalty and then Morata’s strike galvanised Simeone’s team – too often dealt cruel blows in the Champions League latter stages.
When the two sides meet again on March 12 at the Allianz Stadium, it will require a herculean effort from Max Allegri’s men to overcome such a huge gulf in class and determination.
